Samsung’s display manufacturing division has announced that its new QD-OLED panel for monitors and TVs is called QD-OLED Penta Tandem. Unlike its previous-generation QD-OLED panels, this newer panel features a five-layer organic light-emitting structure, making displays brighter and increasing their lifespan.

QD-OLED panels use a blue light-emitting layer as a backlight source. Starting last year, Samsung Display switched from a four-layer structure to a five-layer structure for that blue light-emitting component and adopted newer organic materials. Together, these changes bring higher peak brightness, improved power efficiency, and better picture quality.

The company says these panels offer 30% better luminance efficiency and twice the lifespan. This technology competes head-to-head with LG Display's Tandem OLED and Tandem WOLED panels.

While these panels have already been used in QD-OLED TVs from multiple brands in 2025, Samsung Display recently received the QD-OLED Penta Tandem trademark. TV panels using this technology can reach peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits on a 3% window, while monitors can reach peak brightness of up to 1,300 nits on a 3% window.

Panels featuring QD-OLED Penta Tandem technology have received the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification. They can maintain perfect blacks (0.0005 nits or lower) and reach peak brightness of up to 500 nits on a 10% window.

The company’s 27-inch QD-OLED monitor panel, launched last year, has a pixel density of 160 ppi, the highest among OLED panels for gaming monitors. Samsung Display is also the only company mass-producing 27-inch 4K (UHD) self-emissive panels, while 27-inch OLED panels from other brands, such as LG Display, are limited to QHD resolution.

Samsung Display aims to apply QD-OLED Penta Tandem technology to all its QD-OLED monitor panels starting this year. The company currently offers four monitor panels:

  • 27-inch UHD (3,840 × 2,160 pixels)
  • 31.5-inch UHD (3,840 × 2,160 pixels)
  • 34-inch WQHD (2,560 × 1,440 pixels)
  • 49-inch Dual-QHD (5,120 × 1,440 pixels)

Brad Jung, Vice President and Head of the Large Display Marketing Team at Samsung Display, said, “A multi-layer organic light-emitting structure is not simply about adding more layers. It requires deep expertise in selecting materials and optimizing their thickness and combinations. Penta Tandem, built on nearly five years of QD-OLED mass production experience since 2021, represents the ultimate choice for customers looking to demonstrate the premium value of QD-OLED.
