Some of you may have noticed that the base models of these devices are now more expensive than last year. No reason was offered during the Unpacked event for these price hikes, but they're very much in the field now.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 starts at $1,899 for the base model that comes with 12GB of RAM as standard with 256GB of storage. Last year, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 cost $1,799 and it came with the same amount of RAM and storage.
On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 now starts at $1,099 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage model. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was $999 last year with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. At least you're getting 50% more RAM for the money on the latest clamshell foldable, so that should make this price hike sting a bit less.
It's pertinent to note that Samsung has retained the older prices for a few years now, possibly to make sure that enough people moved to these devices before it contemplated raising them. It's particularly not a good look for the Flip to break that $999 psychological price point, but that's happened now.
Whatever your views on the price increase, Samsung has started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 today and it will release the handsets on July 24.
