The Galaxy Z Fold 7 may sound like the seventh generation of Samsung’s flagship foldable, but it’s actually the eighth Galaxy Fold to date. Unveiled on July 9 at Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event in New York City, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has everyone wondering: is this just another incremental upgrade, or has Samsung finally delivered something truly exciting?

Let’s break down everything there is to know about the Galaxy Z Fold 7, starting with the design.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 is bringing an ultra-thin design, bigger displays

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup has long been criticized for its narrow cover screens, which force the user to unfold the device when they want to get serious work done. That changed with the release of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition (SE), which brought a wider cover display and also a larger main display. With the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung is making those bigger screens more mainstream.

But the Fold 7 isn’t just a rebranded Fold SE. Samsung has been on a mission to make its phones thinner than ever, and like the Galaxy S25 Edge, the Fold 7 breaks new ground.

It’s Samsung’s thinnest foldable yet, measuring 4.2mm when unfolded (not counting the camera bump). For comparison, the Fold SE is 4.9mm thick when unfolded, while the Fold 6 sits at 5.6mm.

When folded, the Fold 7's thickness measures 8.9mm. That's not all: the Fold 7 is also incredibly light. At 215g, it is lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra and every other foldable on the market.

The dramatic reduction in thickness is made possible by the larger displays. The Fold 7 features a 6.5-inch cover screen and an 8.0-inch main display, both running at an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. These bigger screens likely gave Samsung more flexibility when distributing internal components.

The foldable display is protected by 50% thicker Ultra Thin Glass for enhanced durability. Durability is also enhanced by a titanium backplate supporting the display, and the crease in the middle of the screen is less visible compared to previous models.

The Fold 7 also sports a fresh new color palette. It’s available in black, white, and blue, with blue serving as the hero color for this year’s lineup. It livens up the usually drab color options the company offers for its flagship devices.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 specs: Faster Snapdragon chip, higher-res camera, and not much more

While the Fold 7 impresses with its design, the internal hardware is a mix of upgrades and familiarity.

The Fold 7 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite ‘For Galaxy' chipset, and it features a 200MP camera like the Galaxy S Ultra flagships and the Galaxy Z Fold SE.

On the software front, you get One UI 8 (Android 16) out of the box, along with the promise of seven years of OS and security updates. If the best software experience and long-term support are your priorities, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has no equal in the foldable segment.

However, some things are unchanged from what we have been getting for the past several years. For example, the Fold 7 has the same 3x telephoto camera and 12MP ultrawide camera as the Fold 6. Samsung has gotten rid of the under-display camera and replaced it with a traditional 10MP selfie camera. The cover screen also features a 10MP camera for selfies without unfolding the phone.

Samsung has left the battery capacity unchanged. The Fold 7 features a 4,400 mAh battery, same as the last five Galaxy Z Folds. Charging speed maxes out at 25W. Essentially, it's up to the Snapdragon 8 Elite and software optimization to do the heavy lifting as far as battery life is concerned, and initial tests show endurance is similar or slightly higher than the Fold 6.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 retains the same IP48 water and dust resistance rating as the Fold 6 and an Armor Aluminum frame instead of titanium.

Finally, Samsung has removed S Pen support, somewhat dulling the edge the bigger displays provide in terms of screen estate.

When is the Z Fold 7 coming and what does it cost?
