Gemini is said to be the most powerful conversational AI that Google has created. According to reports from The Information, this multimodal AI chatbot was supposed to grace the world next week with multiple events in California, New York, and Washington, where politicians and policymakers were also expected to be present.
But after some in-house research, Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, decided to delay the launch of Gemini. It is said that Google found out that the AI didn’t reliably handle some non-English queries. Global language support is one of the key factors for Google to make Gemini surpass the likes of OpenAI's GPT-4, and since Gemini has yet to achieve that standard, there has been a delay in its launch.
It is also said that Gemini has been able to strongly outperform Chat GPT-4 in private tests, thanks to the use of greater computing power than the latter. Google's CEO said in November that “the company is focused on getting Gemini 1.0 out as soon as possible, making sure it’s a competitive and state-of-the-art, and we’ll build from there on.”
Sissie Hsiao, Google’s vice president and manager of Bard and Google Assistant, reportedly explained the prowess of the Gemini AI chatbot by giving an example, “I’ve seen some pretty amazing things. Like, If I’m trying to bake a cake, draw me 3 pictures of the steps to how to ice a three-layer cake, and Gemini will create those images. These are completely novel pictures, not just pictures from the internet.“
