The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the most impressive device Samsung unveiled at its Galaxy Unpacked event today. It has a substantially thinner and lighter body, faster performance, bigger screens, and better rear cameras. But it has a minor change that you might miss. It has a newer inner selfie camera as well.
Samsung started using a 4MP under-display selfie camera for the inner display on its foldable phones with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, this year, it switched to a regular camera for the inner display on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The new phone has a 10MP selfie camera fitted inside a punch hole-shaped display cutout. It is a 1/3-inch sensor with an F2.2 aperture, a 100-degree field-of-view (FOV), and 1.12µm pixels.
While under-display cameras might offer a clean-looking display devoid of any cutouts, their image quality is much worse than regular cameras. And Samsung was forced to switch back to a regular camera after using under-display cameras for four years.
Even the front-facing camera on the cover screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 uses the same sensor, aperture, FOV, and lens. Both selfie cameras on the phone can record up to 4K 60fps videos with 10-bit Super HDR (HDR10 and HDR10+). In comparison, the inner selfie camera of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 could only record 1080p videos in SDR.
