Android Auto to get browser and video apps soon

Google released Android Auto in 2015. Even though it has been ten years since then, there are still only a limited number of applications available for the platform. That’s because it supports only a limited type of apps, including media, navigation, point-of-interest, Internet of Things,  and Weather. Well, Google is adding support for more types of apps to Android Auto.

At the Google I/O 2025 event, Google announced that it is adding support for two more types of apps to Android Auto: Browser apps and video apps, paving the way for you to access apps like Chrome, Samsung Internet, Netflix, and YouTube on Android Auto. However, these will work only if the phone is running Android 16 or newer and only on select car models.

We hope that Google restricts people from accessing these apps while driving their cars to prevent them from unnecessary distractions leading to accidents.

Google has also revealed that on Android Auto, the support for weather apps has moved from ‘In Beta’ to ‘Open,’ which means that Google will now approve more weather apps to be available on the platform.

Support for games and communication apps (messaging and VoIP) is ‘In Beta,’ which means that you should be able to see these types of apps on the platform soon. All-in-all, the number of apps available for Android Auto should increase drastically in the coming days.
