Samsung has officially announced that it is joining hands with AMD for the 5G vRAN network transformation. This is in line with Samsung's commitment to help cellular network operators build and modernize their mobile networks with optimized performance and flexibility. With AMD on board, operators will have a wider set of choices to build high-capacity, energy-efficient, and performance-oriented network systems.

Both Samsung and AMD have completed several rounds of tests at Samsung's lab to “verify high-capacity and telco-grade performance using FDD bands and TDD Massive MIMO wide bands.” The test results also concluded that these new FDD and TDD Massive MIMO bands offer high performance while significantly reducing power usage. In this joint collaboration, Samsung's vRAN software was integrated with the new AMD EPYC 8004 processors.

Henrik Jansson, Vice President and Head of SI Business Group, Samsung Networks, said, “This technical collaboration demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to delivering network flexibility and high performance for service providers by building a larger vRAN and Open RAN ecosystem.

The South Korean giant has also said that it will continue to work with the US-based chipmaker to drive new innovation for next-gen networks. Lynn Comp, Corporate Vice President of Technical Marketing, Server Business at AMD, added, “By integrating our AMD EPYC processors with Samsung’s leading vRAN solution, operators will have a powerful tool with the incredible energy efficiency and balanced performance needed for this environment.
