The Android XR update rolled out earlier this month is causing serious performance issues for Galaxy XR headset users, though Google says it is already on the case and treating the fix with “absolute top priority.”

Reports from Galaxy XR users on Reddit suggest the headset becomes unstable after roughly 20 to 30 minutes of use. What starts as normal performance gradually degrades into severe slowdowns, with many users describing a point where every animation effectively turns into a slideshow.

Early discussion points to a critical memory leak as the likely cause. In practice, this means the headset appears unable to properly manage system resources over time, eventually leading to freezing, stuttering, or a dramatic drop in responsiveness that makes basic interaction difficult or impossible.

There is some good news, or some reassurance from Google. The company responded directly to the Reddit thread and confirmed that the Android XR development team is fully aware of the issue.

According to Google, work on a fix is already underway, and the situation is being treated as an urgent priority. However, no timeline has been shared for when a patch will actually arrive, leaving affected users in limbo for now.

While most complaints are related to PC VR sessions, the problem does not seem limited to that use case alone. At least one Galaxy XR user said the memory leak happens regardless of what tasks the headset is performing.

If you own a Galaxy XR device, it may be worth holding off on installing the April update if that option is still available. Otherwise, the only real path forward right now is waiting for Google to deliver a hotfix that restores the Galaxy XR's intended performance levels.

For those still considering a purchase, Samsung is currently selling the Galaxy XR headset in the US for $1,799.

When we reviewed the headset, none of these stability issues were present, and the overall experience was largely positive. That said, we also noted that Galaxy XR still sits firmly in niche territory. It is impressive hardware, but it will take further refinement before it can realistically push into the mainstream.
