Facebook orders 8000 Gear VR headsets from Samsung
Facebook has made it pretty clear that it wants to be a major player in the VR arena. It acquired Oculus for precisely this purpose and the company will soon release its own virtual reality headset. Oculus also has a relationship with Samsung and has helped it out with the Gear VR. Facebook is going to take this partnership further as CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the Galaxy S7 event and to give a boost to the distribution of VR technology it has reportedly ordered 8000 Gear VR headsets from Samsung.
The company is said to have placed an order for 8000 Gear VR units to Samsung North America. It’s expected to send out 3000 units to developers and 5000 to employees, this means that the core of Facebook’s VR service will be developed based on the Gear VR. “We will further develop VR in concert with Samsung Electronics,” Zuckerberg said at Galaxy Unpacked 2016, and this certainly seems like a step in the right direction.

Sure! 3D-TV died last year because nobody wants to use glasses while watching TV. What on earth makes Facebook (and Samsung – the business that helped kill 3D-TV) believe that people will sit in their living room while wearing those giant VR-headsets watching cats in 480p on Facebook?
One quick question: Have you tried it before (and i dont mean Cardboard)? And think all you can do with it is watching videos on Facebook?
No, I don’t think that’s the only use for it. But i KNOW that John Doe is not going to buy VR-goggles to work with simulators and CAD-systems. John Doe wants to see kittens and funny videos on YouTube.
I watch my favourite tv shows like the walking dead, game of thrones, banshe, ect in a virtual cinema on a huge screen and it’s great.
And i can do that whereever i want, even in bed, on the toilet :), while camping or a plane.
You’d be surprised at how dumb people are about Facebook. It’s a terrible trap to gain information about people, and I can’t stand it. It’s not too be trusted. And still, people put everything into it, all of their private information, relationships, etc. Quite dumb.
Step in the right direction.
