A report from research firm Counterpoint Research shows that more than a billion Samsung Galaxy smartphones are currently active worldwide. The South Korean company ranks second only to Apple, which has the largest number of active smartphones globally. Together, Apple and Samsung account for more than 44 percent of the world’s active smartphones.
Only Samsung and Apple have crossed the milestone of one billion active smartphones, highlighting their strong market presence, ability to keep users engaged, and well-developed ecosystems. Apple holds a 24 percent share of active smartphones, while Samsung Galaxy devices account for 19 percent of all smartphones currently in use worldwide.
According to the report, both companies have maintained long-term user engagement due to durable hardware, extended software support, strong resale values, tightly integrated ecosystems, and powerful brand loyalty.
While Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, Transsion, Huawei, and Honor each have more than 200 million active smartphones globally, they hold only single-digit market share in the premium segment, which the report defines as devices priced at $600 or higher. Google's Pixel phones account for just 1 percent of globally active smartphones.
As hardware improvements have slowed, competition among smartphone brands is increasingly shifting toward ecosystem strength and software experience. This is an area where Apple and Samsung continue to hold a clear advantage over most competitors.
Samsung will announce the Galaxy S26 series later this month, and the phones will become available for purchase early next month. They will bring improved AI and software features and some hardware improvements. You can learn about their features and specifications here.
