Samsung is one of the largest conglomerates in South Korea. Its presence is felt in every industry and is routinely ranked as a highly sought-after employer. The company's long history of innovation has also cemented its place as a visionary leader.
It routinely patents new innovations, even if they don't immediately materialize as commercial products, to ensure competitiveness. Therefore, it's unsurprising to hear that Samsung holds the largest number of patents in its home country of South Korea.
The Korean Intellectual Property Office today announced the top registrants of patents and trademarks that have contributed significantly to the country's industrial development and technological innovation. The data was presented based on a comprehensive review of the patents and trademarks registered since the 1946 Patent Act.
Samsung Electronics leads the way with 134,802, accounting for 6% of all patents registered in South Korea. This business unit of the Samsung conglomerate develops everything from advanced semiconductors to mobile devices, and is one of the biggest contributors of revenue to the conglomerate. Samsung Electronics registered 5,255 just last year, showcasing its continued push to secure advantage in key areas of growth.
No other Samsung group company was on the list of top 5 patent holds, as the remaining four spots after Samsung Electronics were taken by LG Electronics, Hyundai Motor Co., SK Hynix, and LG Display. The collective innovations of these and other companies has made South Korea the top holder of patent applications relative to GDP.
