With Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google has introduced a new design language for apps, dubbed as the ‘Material Design', which brings bright colors and three-dimensional UI elements. More and more developers are now upgrading their apps with the new design language. Devices running older versions of Android can still run apps with UI based on Material design, if the app developer includes a ported library from Google. Apparently, Samsung smartphones may have problems running apps with Material design as they run older versions of the android support library in the framework or class path. According to Koushik Datta, apps with new Material support library crash on Samsung smartphones and tablets. Since it is a problem from Samsung's side, he notes that the only way to fix this problem till Samsung doesn't fix it, is to rename internal classes. It can be easily done by running ProGuard, a program which optimises Android apps.

Samsung is already working on Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its high-end smartphones such as the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S5. Have you experienced any issues running Material design apps on your Samsung smartphones or tablets running older versions of Android?
