Rumor: Galaxy S7 edge and edge Plus variants could launch at the same time

With all the hype Samsung has created around curved displays this year, it’s a surefire guarantee that the Galaxy S7 will also come in a variant that features a curved screen. It was recently rumored that Samsung might not release a regular flat screen model and simply launch the curved screen variant worldwide, and the source of that rumor is now suggesting that the Galaxy S7 will come in two different screen sizes at the same time.

Both variants, despite the varying screen sizes, will have a curved display according to Samsung Viet. It doesn’t exactly sound far-fetched, and it would mean that both a standard and a super-sized Plus variant would come out at the same time. It’s likely to raise an outcry from Samsung fans about the company following in Apple’s footsteps even more seriously next year, but for Samsung it would certainly be a good move, especially since launching a Galaxy S7 Edge Plus in early 2016 would allow it to concentrate on the Galaxy Note 6 during the latter half of the year.

Our own insiders haven’t said anything to support this rumor, and while we aren’t that far away from the rumored January launch of the Galaxy S7, a lot of things can change by the time the phone is ready for release. What do you think about Samsung launching an edge and edge Plus variant of the Galaxy S7 at the same time?

It will be launching at the same time, true story, not just a rumour! At the same time with S8, S9, S10 and their Edge, +, – and * versions!

Samsung are jus trying to change their flagship dates. From March to January, and from September to August.
They can’t wait 2 years so they have to do it earlier than usual. I don’t believe that the S6 edge+ will be left behind.

Actually we don’t care about them releasing the Note 6 next year, we care about them “fixing” the Note 5 (they do this, by making a good Galaxy S7, in 5.8″ – then it’s a note ……… sans the pen)

Make the S7 edge have less features and include them in edge plus.

Better move on.

I just posted a comment but it doesn’t show here. I’ll write my thoughts again just in case.
1. Releasing a s7 edge and edge + is a good idea. The s6 edge proved to be far more popular whether it’s a gimmick or not. Only price should be lower. Samsung needs to forget about this war price with apple even if Samsung’s devices are indeed better.
2. Samsung shouldn’t make them thinner on the contrary they should be slightly thicker with a bigger battery of no less than 3800 mAH if it’s reluctant to bring the removable battery feature back.
3. It should be water/ dust proof.
4. It should at least have micro SD
5. Samsung shouldn’t waste time and resources putting the so called cleartouch feature to try to compete with Apple’s 3D touch. It’s not really that great and it’s not what consumers really need or wish right now. It’s just another gimmick worse than the curved screen. Hardly anyone talks about touch sensitivity which is far better and more useful. I’d rather see Samsung focusing on improving the excellent camera even more and making touchwiz even more user friendly and better looking.

Should be cheaper, battery should be better, should have micro SD card slot, better camera, better hardware, better software…anything else?

I wonder why you’re asking for better everything and yet you aren’t willing to pay a higher price for better everything…

SAMgalaxyXXX

You forgot water/dust proof too.
If you read my last comment in response to Kronicle you would realise that one of the features I couldn’t care about it’s my Micro SD and the features I talked about are practically standard in most 2015 flagships except iphones. I listed them because that would make Samsung more appealing to customers which it desperately needs right now to increase profits not because I necessarily need them but other people do. I don’t care much about water/dust proof either but it would be a welcome addiction Samsung shouldn’t have removed once they introduced it on S5.

“I wonder why you’re asking for better everything and yet you aren’t willing to pay a higher price for better everything…”

You obviously didn’t read the last sentence of my comment where I stated that I’m proud owner of Note 4 which might be cheaper now but not when I bought it.

First off; all comments are now monitored. So it takes some time before they are approved or not. Which is the reason both your comments appear now. Edge screens have been proven NOT to be a gimmick or all their competitors (like LG and next will be Apple for sure, as their recent patents indicate) wouldn’t be trying to copy them. I say trying, because none have had Touchwiz features until they finally got the Desktop Computing UX features….. Touchwiz and ARM have designed into ARM instruction in chip features.

Which includes the fact Touchwiz was built on Enlightenment Desktop Environment….. not Android milk toast halfwit featureless UX for mobiles from the start. Enlightenment has been left at the back of the bus on Desktops as a sort of reject UX with too many half baked features, needing more powerful chips. With Gnome and KDE the primarily most popular UX (user interface).

Yet…. ARM had multiple i/O screen capabilities since 2010, with extreme Multitasking, drag n drop, etc too. But neither Google or Apple thought them important and seen mobiles more as cheapened featureless devices w/ mostly small screens and weak chips. This is the old 50′s TV show mind set like, “The Outer Limits”!!! Where we control the horizontal, vertical, what you see, what you don’t see and may never get mind control attitude.

Samsung thought, “if this is a miniature desktop computer, why not give our users all the same or even better…. more features on them? They’ve been heavily criticized for that chose. But….. now we’ve reached the point with larger screens, more powerful chips, etc, that it makes all the sense in the World and suddenly all the control freaks are copying SAMSUNG… and crying about being 1st… like some grade schooler on YouTube comments!

There will never be a return to removable batteries and they didn’t go there following Google or Apple. They went there because they are the leading OEM battery maker in Samsung SDI on the Planet. They spent the most (of their profits) back into R&D and CAPEX….. where others just wait to steal, buy or copy them in battery technology. It’s all beginning to pay off, with batteries with fast smart charging circuits built in for safety and longer life. Energy efficiency has gone up with new materials now in the pipeline, as well as the ability to form them to any shape and in fact make them flexible.

But old style batteries need an outer case to protect them, make them safer and form them into flat rectangles. Samsung doesn’t just Think Different….. they are different…. always thinking years in advance. Therefore today with their own #1 Battery Technology, in the #1 selling Brand of Smartphones with SAMSUNG on all them (not like Apple w/ few models, just so they can be cheap and use fewer, cheaper parts for their ONE SIZE FITS ALL models in the past)!!!

It’s a fallacy to believe Apple FUD and Propaganda about being the #1 selling BRAND…. when reality is they carry one Chairman Mao Suit Model, so everybody knows they are members of Apple’s Fascist Led Elitism Religion! …….and Samsung says, “Hey we don’t want to be like Apple, who are more like Hitler’s Fascists with Swatikas (rotten bitten apple logo) on their arms w/ users all saluting us as if we are God”!

So Samsung went for a range of device from high to low priced, to more and lesser features to fit almost every need, want, there is or will be in the World. These new non-removable batteries cost more, last longer, are safer from fires and exploding batteries, using better materials and not requiring thick plastic rectangular encasement or external safety and charging circuits. Samsung is now transferring what they’ve learned from Mobiles to EV automotive use and Boeing Dreamliner battery packs. Now they can’t simply put them in plastic backed cases, it defeats the whole purpose of better, safer, longer lasting battery technology in higher quality closed cased devices today!

As far as waterproof…. etc? Not everybody cares about those features, since most still use external cases that can provide those features, if they want or they can just buy their Active Galaxy series phones. But right now the S5 Active is selling cheaper on ebay than S5 standard. Even though they spent more money to develop it specifically for user who like to abuse their phones. Which you can do to a far greater degree anyway. Save those features for the people who really want and need them. Don’t try to please everyone with one single model like Apple does!

Now for SD cards; there is a very good reason for Samsung NOT to have included them in recent models. 1. Because licensing MS FAT (a ridiculously slow, expensive, old lame featureless file format has gotten worse with ExFAT licensing now. Phone makers now pay more for sum 3 dozen SDA member’s standards license fees than the SD card slot itself. 2. MicroSDXC memory cards now require an extra row of pins in NEW slots (old slots are now about to become extinct). Leading to even more expensive licensing and even more expensive MicroSD cards. Newest one now…. is 512GB MicroSD that’ll set you back $1000. 3. When these new slots come down in price (like USB2.0 vs USB3.0) then Samsung might bring back MicroSD with NEW Slots and cheaper cards next year. But… for the time being if they had included them, the phones would cost too much with the SD slots that are both faster (support UFS 2.0 standards) and are backwards compatible with old MicroSD memory cards too!

Otherwise we all would be paying more for SD card slots most of us don’t use now anyway, just to keep a few happy, who don’t understand what it takes to design and make a variety of devices to suit most everyone. Sometimes phone makers have to make compromises and MicroSD card slots in phones is one of them, until the SDA gets off their M$ FAT rear ends and stops thinking like Apple, that their standards patents are worth more than the hardware.

btw… Right now there are only a very few device makers willing to pay for new MicroSDXC UHS-II Card Slots. They are mostly very expensive camera makers. Samsung’s highest end camera has these new MicroSD card slots for instance. They will come to phones when the price comes down and the iDiots in the SDA Membership figure out that SD cards are the new HD-DVD Dead Man Walking Standard if licensing fees don’t come down in price! …..and as to 3D Touch? Well Samsung will be the only one bringing out both Synaptic’s 5yr old 3D Force and 3D Touch Air View features next year!!!! Apple? ….still has not been 1st in anything. Well… except maybe flapping their Fascist led, Elitist Jaws, like grade schooler’s on YouTube Comments…. crying 1st all the time!!! :D

“Which includes the fact Touchwiz was built on Enlightenment Desktop Environment….. not Android milk toast halfwit featureless UX for mobiles from the start.”
I’m glad to see that Samsung made an effort to improve touchwiz and its look. I have to say that at least the icons looks better than in any model from the Note 4 behind but it still needs to improve. Why couldn’t it be more customizable so you can change the size of the icons and add more effects when changing widgets? I use Go launcher Z as my main skin because as much as I love my note 4 I can’t stand the look of touchwiz and the lack of proper customization.

“There will never be a return to removable batteries and they didn’t go there following Google or Apple. They went there because they are the leading OEM battery maker in Samsung SDI on the Planet ………It’s all beginning to pay off, with batteries with fast smart charging circuits built in for safety and longer life ……….”

Maybe but it doesn’t matter how efficient batteries can be now the fact is that after a year of moderate to heavy use (which is normal even if one is not a gamer because smartphones are increasingly becoming our main drive on day-to-day use) none of those super efficient batteries (Sony xperia models being the main examples) will last as long, the battery life will be reduced to half or less compared to when the device was new. Even though it marks 100% in real life it could be 50% or less so being able to ditch that battery and buy a new one for a low price is better than having it changed by a specialist or buy a new phone all together. All that without even talking about the convenience of having a small battery in your pocket (Yes better and more convenient than a battery pack case or portable charger). Running out of battery is the least of my concerns with my note 4 and I don’t swap batteries everyday, maybe once/twice every other week but it’s there just in case.

“Now for SD cards; there is a very good reason for Samsung NOT to have included them in recent models……”

No, there is no real reason to do so now until it proves that they are completely useless but they are not for now. To be honest, I’m not upset at all about Samsung ditching that feature because my note 4 is 32gb, I bought a 16GB micro SDcard and I gave it away after a month because I just didn’t really need it but I know people who do use them A LOT. There’s that argument that it makes your phone slower, well in that case all Samsung has to do is to warn consumers about that and if you don’t mind your phone being occasionally 1,2,3 seconds slower because you are a not an impatient, lazy person whose life is so miserable that those seconds can rip your world apart then buy the 64/128 GB model. That argument doesn’t really hold water because power saving mode could also make your phone slower and it’s still there.

“…….and as to 3D Touch? Well Samsung will be the only one bringing out both Synaptic’s 5yr old 3D Force and 3D Touch Air View features next year!!!! Apple?”

A total and utterly waste of time and resources only to compete with apple. As I said before better to concentrate on improving even more some of the excellent features Samsung’s phones have like camera than putting another feature that doesn’t really improve the user’s experience. Also better to put bigger and more efficient batteries even if the phone gets thicker (most people would prefer that with any of their brand of choice be it Samsung, apple, HTC, LG, etc), to work on releasing updates more promptly to most phones not just the latest flagships and stop wasting time and money on releasing 50 different models every year.

Get a clue not only are phones getting smaller and thinner, along with being more energy efficient and lighter weight, but they are lasting longer. Which means like Samsung is estimating OEM batteries in it’s new phones will go 1.5 to 2 yrs before needing to be replaced. The integrated fast charging circuitry with greater safety protection and not requiring a thick plastic case makes them cheaper too.

Estimated cost is far less than half that of batteries replaced by Geniuses in Apple Stores in iPhones. The estimate is between $35 and $55 done by shops. Do it yourself and you save even more. OEM batteries are running between $12 and $16 on ebay and videos show it as a pretty simple job. Anyone with access to a hairdryer can do it in about 20minutes. Plus you don’t have to completely disassemble the S6 like fools like were trying to convince everyone they had to do.

And slower…. you think it’d just make your phone slower? Read my comment about SD card slots again. Because you fail to comprehend what combining old SD slots requiring a separate eMMC memory controller with UFS 2.0 memory. But yes if they bothered to put two memory controllers in to phones it would most definitely make crawl like a snail on both types of memory, because they are completely incompatible with each other. You have a totally different bus architecture from the other and there really is no way to interface them. It would make the phones cost more and you’d destroy the whole reason for the entire World eventually going to UFS memory in the first place!

Now like I’ve said Old MicroSD Slots will become extinct in the very near future. The new SD slots cost more and the latest UHS-II MicroSDXC Memory cards costs are through the roof at the moment. Like I said $1000 for the new 512GB cards!

If you have friends still using old SD cards they are backwards compatible on devices with the new MicroSDXC UHS-II Slots with extra row of pins using either eMMC 4.0 or greater or UFS 2.0 Memory controllers. But…. NOT with old MicroSD card slots! ……which since you don’t seem to have any common sense to comprehend this…. are lacking the extra row of pins required to fully utilize new MicroSDXC UHS-II SD cards features!!! ……right now that means fools that buy them for outrageous prices are doing so for nothing.

There is a huge debate going on over new surface pro tablets over this major issue and Samsung by not including old slots along with UFS memory has avoided this major debacle that started last year!!! ……plus their complete failure to boot anything other than Windows even off SD cards or memory sticks. No Linux Live Rescues off either USB or SD cards!!! ……..they are all stuck with CLI Prompt repairs or sending them in for months of repairs!

And really what is so wrong about Wifi SD Cards or Wifi SSD’s, etc? What’s wrong with MicroUSB memory slots, if you need extra memory storage? Well at least on Linux based Systems!!! Samsung even recognizes external devices the instant you plug them in! …..but really you need to check out the differences between old and new SD card slots and the memory controllers used to acces them. UFS 2.0 is after all meant to completely replace eMMC Memory Standards and that’s according to the JEDEC own Standards! :D …….meaning again… in no uncertain terms, old memory cards and slots are DEAD MEN WALKING!!!

“Get a clue not only are phones getting smaller”…… , REALLY? As far as I can see 5.0/5.1 inch screen has become the standard for practically most manufacturers since 2014 ……… “thinner” YES, indeed but soooooo unnecessary. The vast majority of people would prefer slightly thicker phones with better battery life, even most “expert reviewers” that once praised the thinness of phones are now saying that this thinness trend in detriment of battery life is going too far.
………”along with being more energy efficient and lighter weight, but they are lasting longer” …….. hmmmmmm very questionable. Practically most phones released this year haven’t really come with substantial (in many cases none) improvement in battery life and plenty of reviews and consumers complaints can prove that. All manufacturers like Samsung are doing to compensate that is to bring fast charging or wireless (super) fast charging.
I don’t know all that long explanation about the inconvenience of micro SD card but apart from the argument that can slow down phones or might not work in some cases I haven’t heard anything about old vs new and expensive SD cards you are talking about but you might be right. The point is that still most manufacturers are still putting them in their phones and A LOT of consumers are in favour of it and it’s one of the features that are a deal breaker for them (not for me as I pointed out already). One of the strongest rumours about the coming s7 is that it will come with micro SD card, why would Samsung do that? “IF” it really comes with that feature then your argument will be pointless but better to wait and see before continuing the debate related to this specific feature.

The edge variant whether it’s a gimmick or not proved to be far more popular than the vanilla variant and I actually think that’s the only variant Sammy should have released this year. I also think that releasing an s7 edge and edge + is a good idea as long as Samsung realises that a more flexible price for both it’s also a must and should stop that price war with apple because it’s affecting Samsung far more than Apple.
One feature Samsung shouldn’t waste time and resources on it’s the so call “cleartouch” to compete with apple’s 3D touch which is not really that great and a feature consumers don’t really need right now. Hardly anyone talks about but touch sensitivity is far better and useful than 3D touch. I’d rather see Samsung focusing on improving things even more like the excellent camera and touchwiz. Samsung could also have a winning card by forgetting about making phones thinner and instead making them slightly thicker with a bigger battery of no less than 3800 mAh if it’s finally reluctant to bring the removable battery feature back. Also the s7 should be water/dust proof and have micro SD at least.

It’s hard not to wonder if Samsung’s resources are being stretched too thin across too many models. I think product consolidation and brand simplification would help the company. Three devices tops: 1 Galaxy S, 1 Edge, and 1 Note. So, at the very least, eliminate the Edge or the Edge+.

I’m still not sold on the Edge as a concept. It would be interesting to get consumer feedback after 6-12 months of ownership to see if the novelty wore off or if they would buy the device again. Samsung has yet to demonstrate compelling utility for the curved screen. If the screen is really just about the cool factor, that’s OK, but let’s call a spade a spade and stop pretending there is real utility there. The question is whether the cool factor is worth the more difficult and more expensive manufacturing process… But, hopefully the Edge screens have gotten easier and cheaper to make as time has gone on.

I think you are right. Even if I hate to say it, but Apple does a much better job with their phones. As a brand its crucial to have a good product transparancy. I think 3 high-end flaggships per year is enough. So they can release an “S” per year with a “Plus” Option and then have a year later the Note, which is a small upgrade in terms of hardware. But there should be just one type of the phone, not 20 different like the Note 4, wich drove me crazy with the bad update policy. Then for the middle-class phone for example just the “A”-Series and every year a new one. The size should differ with a “Plus” and not a number…because now the “A”-Series can’t really grow in the future, because every number is already taken from the bigger models. Samsung get your line-up easy understandable and transparent, like your biggest rival Apple. Then your success and reputation can again rise.

That kind of thinking goes only for totally outsourced iTrinket Design Only….. Sunday Infomercial Sales outfits like Apple. With iConic Thieves who have now been Sainted for their superb iCon Artistry. Not huge PRIVATELY HELD….. Megalithic Conglomerates as the most diverse array of holding on the entire planet. Who are so big… that they can spread the Profits around tax free from other phone makers parts, chips, etc businesses.

By conducting their own largest network of R&D Labs (from Techwin to Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology with mini campuses on about every major university on the planet. They do all their own materials mining, own all their own design housessss et all, leading distribution and marketing firms, chip fabrication foundries, parts makers and assembly plants and the property they are on with their own banking and insurance industry, etc and so forth! ….if you’re really BIG like Samsung, you don’t need to go around bragging about being the wealthiest filthy rich PUBLICLY HELD company, who actually has Samsung making their parts, etc for them too!!! :D

Instead you pay your own mining operation excessive profits, to write off materials cost. You then pay yourselves to build your own factories, build the ships to distribute your products and to deliver everything too. You own your own Chip design house to go with your own fabrication plants. Your marketing firms get extra high profits from you, because it’s a way for you make money off yourselves as well. You can go around and pretend you aren’t the #1 Electronics firm in the world and fake like you don’t know that you outsell your closest competitor by over or nearly 2 to 1 and that’s just in smartphones compared to 2nd place Apple.

Meanwhile you can be working on not just future product R&D as #1 or #2 year after year, but compared to Apple completely blow them away…. again Paying yourselves Profits back there too. Meanwhile you can just let the phony phone maker pump out loads of FUD and Misinformation about you, like Apple does and simply laugh it off as the #1 in so many different things, you can scarcely count them all. I mean… really Samsung is one group of Privately Held Companies, who don’t really have to worry about what fools on Wall Street even think of them. Then they just keep raking it all in and worrying about where to shift profits to next and debt to give one division better write offs to better compete with yourselves. Especially since Apple as a single iTrinket Design House Only… who basicly has everything made for them and just claim to be the richest company, while not let it become Public Knowledge that they are just a bunch of Wall Street Con Artist Getting Rich off their Stupid iDiotic Brainwashed Elitist Cult of the Apple Fans!!! xD

So focus on one? lol…. like Apple??? hahaha…. Like Chairman Mao making all true communists wear his Mao Suits, so he could tell they belonged to the PRC! …..yeah right!!! haha…. like everyone should want to look like a bunch fools on Haloween all wearing the same costumes to go out Trick or Treating!!! lol… Sorry, you can have all your Mao Suit Wearing Same O Same products that makes you all look like clones of each other and I’ll take diversity and differentiation for a myriad of different people out to really Think Different… instead of just talk about it!!!
