Samsung may introduce authentication chips for accessories compatible with the Galaxy S6

According to a new report Samsung Electronics is working on a new ecosystem of mobile phone accessories which will be introduced through the Galaxy S6. The company will reportedly rely on authentication chips for accessories compatible with its upcoming flagship. Not only will these chips be mounted in Samsung's own accessories but the company is also said to provide these chips to companies that want to make accessories for the Galaxy S6. This would allow Samsung to increase the number of official accessory manufacturers for its devices and squeeze more profits by further improving its authentication system.

Another advantage of this move will be the ease with which one could differentiate between an original accessory and a counterfeit. At first they're said to appear in accessories like flip covers, and for the Galaxy S Edge they'll allow use of curved screens without having to open or close covers. This doesn't mean that accessory manufacturers won't be able to build products without Samsung's authentication chips but they run the risk of having their products perceived as counterfeits. Moreover they won't enable direct control of the device like chip-based accessories would.

Selling authentication chips to third parties is also seen as an opportunity for the company to offset declining profits of its mobile business.
