Samsung’s 3nm Bitcoin miner chips gain up to 45% energy efficiency

Samsung Foundry kickstarted its 3nm chip production line in late June and began manufacturing chipsets for Bitcoin miners on the new 3nm GAA manufacturing process. The company should also use the 3nm GAA technology to manufacture smartphone chipsets — eventually — but the initial trial run consisted of chips for Bitcoin miners.

And according to a new report citing Samsung Foundry President Dr. Siyoung Choi, the new 3nm-based mining chipsets are roughly 23-to-45% more energy-efficient than chipsets manufactured on previous nodes. (via Coinspeaker)

Market watchers estimate that the move to 3nm manufacturing, and the inherent energy savings, could massively scale back carbon emissions associated with Bitcoin mining.

Samsung Foundry to start 2nm chipset manufacturing by the end of 2025

In addition to discussing the latest energy gains after switching to 3nm-based manufacturing, Dr. Choi also discussed a bit about the future of Samsung Foundry. Specifically, 2nm nodes.

The President confirmed that 3nm manufacturing will remain at the forefront for the next few years. After 3nm comes 2nm, and Samsung Foundry should be able to produce chipsets on 2nm nodes by 2025's end. In other words, the company's plans revealed in a roadmap in October haven't changed.

Samsung Foundry's rival, TSMC, wants to start high-volume production of 3nm-class chips in the second half of 2022 — albeit without GAA technology. And like Samsung, TSMC aims for a 2025 production window for 2nm chips.
