According to a new report, OPPO could be the next smartphone maker to launch its own processor. Over the past few years, Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and Google have launched their own chipsets. Even Xiaomi had launched an in-house processor but did not use it extensively.

The new report indicates that OPPO is planning to mass-produce its first smartphone chipset in 2023 and could launch it sometime in 2024. It will reportedly be an entry-level processor and used in an affordable smartphone from OPPO. The chipset could be manufactured using TSMC's 6nm process. However, future chipsets in the lineup could use an integrated modem and a 4nm TSMC fabrication process.

The report says that various parts of the chipset design, including front-end and back-end design, IP design, memory system architecture, algorithm, supply chain tape-out, and integration, are done within the company.

OPPO is not new to designing chips, and it launched its first smartphone chipset—Mariana MariSilicon X—last year. It is the company's first multi-purpose chipset that combines NPU (Neural Processing Unit), ISP, and multi-tier memory architecture. It offers advanced camera-centric features like 4K Night Mode video with live preview.

It remains to be seen how competitive OPPO's upcoming chip would be, but smartphone brands have been trying to reduce their reliance on chipset makers like MediaTek and Qualcomm.

Samsung has been making its own chipsets for more than ten years now, and brands like Motorola and Vivo have used those processors. However, its chipsets haven't been able to beat the performance of rival chips from Qualcomm. The South Korean firm said it will now consider making chips tailored for just Galaxy phones for better performance and optimization.
