Ok, the upgrade from 4.2.2 to 5.0.1 was a success on a unlocked AT&T S4. I guess one just needs patience to wait until it reboots after each update. I had previously tried to if KIES will allow me to update but it always reported 4.2.2 to be the latest version.

Big Thanks to Farsat for this excellent guide with links to the proper files.

Now the question is if ever need a factory reset will it go back to 4.2.2? or will it remain at 5.0.1?

P.S. do you know what Farasat means? Perception / Sagacity... A person having or showing an ability to understand difficult ideas and situations and to make good decisions
What is the version of odin that you used to flash NB1 4.4.2

    Hi guys,
I have updated my i9500 to the 5.0.1 version yesterday.
Since then the device reboots several times a day?
Any ideas what can be the problem?

Did you put phone into Recovery Mode and wipe cache then wipe data /factory reset?
This removes the conflicts in your firmware that are causing the reboots.

    1. Backup your data with Helium app

    2. Put phone into Recovery Mode
    Recovery Mode =
    Turn off phone
Press and hold Volume up + Home Button + Power button (all 3 together)
Blue writing of Recovery Mode, use volume to select Wipe cache and power button to action
Now go back and wipe data/factory reset.

Your phone will start as new (but with most recently installed firmware)
This will have removed any conflicts and your phone will be stable.

    You're welcome

yes, you need root to do all those things
No direct root for OC3 ( 5.0.1 ) till now but you can downgrade to 4.4.2 by odin and instal 4.4.4 ota update by stock recovery and then root 4.4.4 NJ4 after you root NJ4 you can upgrade to OC3 ( 5.0.1 ) without losing root.

    1. Downgrade to 4.4.2 NB1
    2. Update to 4.4.4 NJ4
    3. Root 4.4.4 NJ4 [ Login above or register to see download links. ]
    4. Upgrade to lollipop OC3 ( 5.0.1 ) without losing root [ Login above or register to see download links. ]
