Can't reinstall stock rom via Odin!!

I've downloaded the stock rom for my Note 10.1 (N8010) but when I come to get Odin to install it it fails with the message "Can't open the serial (COM) port.

What does this mean and is there a solution?

Also if I've downloaded the stock firmware for the N8010 via Sammobile how many files should there be?

    Thanks.

Sounds like you haven't got the most recent USB drivers on your PC.
Disconnect Tab from PC and stop Odin.
    Go to Kies and update.
Connect Tab with original quality USB lead, and allow Windows to recognise and update drivers.
Wait for confirmation that new hardware is installed and working.

While in Kies, go to Tools > Firmware upgrade and initialization > follow instructions and Kies will install the latest firmware for your Tab -
    - it may also say Kies cannot initialize
In this case it is back to Odin, but close Kies.
Try your install again - sammobile phones usually only come with one .tar.md5 file after unzipping (ignore the .dll file)
Put the .tar.md5 file in the PDA/AP box of Odin and chnage no other settings.

Still no luck with the Sammobile file. Oh well 5euros down the drain :-(

Opening the COM port has nothing to do with the firmware download.
    Have you tried:
    1. Another USB lead? Must be original or original quality.
Cheaper and thinner USB leads do not work.
    2. Another USB port on your PC.
Do not connect through a USB hub.
The best USB port is on the motherboard (at rear of a desktop PC)
    3. Do not use a USB 3.0 port.
    4. Do not have Kies and Odin running together.
    5. Check that your antivirus is not blocking.

If all above OK then put Tab into Recovery Mode and Wipe data/factory reset.
    Now try all above again.

    Getting nearer.
It's the 'write' stage that is failing.
Do you have a good quality USB lead?
    If possible try another one.

Did you check all 5 points in my previous post?
    If so, try again.
Has been known to take 2 or 3 flashes before install completes successfuly.

    Missed on thing out
    Try a different Odin version.

Not the original I'll seek out the original one.

Yes no difference I tried the USB ports at the side of my laptop

    3. Do not use a USB 3.0 port.

How can you tell? One of mine has a blue piece of plastic inside the socket
    4. Do not have Kies and Odin running together.

    I closed Kies down.
    5. Check that your antivirus is not blocking.

    No AV running I think!!

...And the blue USB is 3.0 so avoid using that one:

No luck again. Tried a different version of Odin.

Currently I have this version on my Tablet [ Login above or register to see download links. ] (which now behaves like a N8000 despite being an N8010!) On the whole it's not too bad despite despite loosing some SPen functions and the multi- window function.

My thoughts are if anything goes wrong it'll be nice to revert back to the original Stock ROM hence my downloading the original Stock ROM from SamMobile.
