Getting hold of update firmware to self install has become quite tricky since the Hotfile server went down.

Best way now is to install Kies on your PC. P
Connect phone and let the usb drivers fully install (windows will tell you)
Now go to Tools >Upgrade Firmware and Initialization

If Kies will initialize, then the latest firmware will be installed.

i have managed to put gingerbread onto the phone and everything is working now.still have a problem, the phone pairs with my car stereo and bluetooth works fine but the phone keeps saying phonebook access request.but no way to open this or send the contacts to the car stereo.i am not too fussed about this but the message pops up about every 15-20 seconds with a chime as well.
    any ideas please?
also how can i tell phone to only use sim for contacts.
    thanks

Your firmware is pretty old now, so can only guide you to where you need to go rather than give exact instructions:
Go to Menu > Applications Manager?? > All and find Bluetooth and Clear cache.
This should stop the pop ups.

    As for selecting sim contacts,
Go to Contacts > Menu > Contacts to display > SIM
