    Question Updating to 4.3 manually

    Hi everyone!

    * In order to use ODIN and update my S4 I9500, does it have to be unlocked?
    * Can I use an open ROM on a carrier ROM (CLARO-ARGENTINA)?
    * Is it worth updating from 4.2.2 to 4.3?
    * Last one!: Would you please show me about the "wiping" process and when I should be doing it, etc?

    Thanks in advance!

    Rodrigo

    1. Yes, to install any firmware you choose on a network locked phone, it has to be unlocked first.
    2. If unlocked you can install any firmware from any country - even network firmware.
    3. Updating is always recommended - although not always better as there can be glitches with new firmware.
    4. Before wiping you need to backup your data.
Take a look at the Helium app in the Play Store.

Then go into Recovery Mode :
Press and hold, Volume up + Home button + Power button (all 3 together) until on blue writing of Recovery Mode.

Use volume to choose Clear Cache and Power button to action.

Now do same for Clear Data /Factory Reset.

    thanks a lot, greenman.

I will use one of the online sites to unlock it. My only concern is that something goes wrong during the update. But I read that I can go back to 4.2.2, right?

    Wrong.
The 4.3 firmware uses a different folder to hold some important information on your phone.
This folder, the EFS, will not allow you to downgrade without losing your IMEI number and mobile network connection.

There is a way round it, if you are considering returning to 4.2.2, but it involves :
    1. Rooting your phone.
    2. Backing up your EFS folder.

Well, I'm stuck then... I never rooted or played with phones... I started reading tutorials and I kind of got lost...

What do you suggest that I start with? Some newbie links I mean...

It's just that I hate not being able to update! My carrier sucks...

    Much appreciated.

First of all, why do you want to change your phone firmware?
Have you tried updating with Kies?

Before going further find out the Product Code and Firmware on your phone by installing this app.

I just want to update but my carrier is not releasing.
    My product code is GT-I9500ZKPCTI
    FIRMWARE: I9500UBUBMG1

Kies is not updating. Says the firmware I have is the latest.

Samsung recommend that you only update with Kies or OTA (through your settings)

    Your Claro firmware is here:

Your firmware is up to date, and I would recommend not changing your firmware until you get a Kies update.

Why is it that some carriers won't release updates? 4.4.2 is already rolling out in Europe and I still have 4.2.2...

Is Root Explorer a good app? what unlocking method would you recommend?

    thanks much!

Carriers do not have to update firmware as they make no money from it.

Best unlock method is through your network.
Next is an online unocker or your local mobile shop.

Root Explorer is a good app, but unless you want to do serious work with your phone, My files does an OK job.

Changing firmware after 4.3 is becoming much more difficult and loss of network connection is becoming much more likely.

The good days of Android firmware changing are coming to an end.
That is why I recommend that you stay with Kies updates.
