Pro mode video recording is missing on Android Pie for the Galaxy S9/Note 9

In an attempt to get the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update out there as quickly as possible, Samsung may have forgotten to include the option to record videos in Pro mode. On Android Pie, video recording gets a dedicated mode in the camera app. It’s a change many haven’t taken kindly to, and it seems Samsung didn’t take into account that this would require an important change in Pro mode as well.

Before Pie, video recording had a dedicated button next to the regular camera shutter button, so one could simply switch to Pro mode and hit that button to start recording videos with manual camera settings. But Pie has a separate Video mode, so switching to Pro mode only allows you to take photos. And, funnily enough, if you go into the camera settings and try to modify what camera modes you see in the camera interface, the description for Pro mode says that it lets you “take control of your videos.”

It’s clearly a major oversight on Samsung’s part, and the company seems to have rushed to make the camera app more iPhone-like without thinking things through. And it also raises questions about how final these official updates really are. While the Galaxy Note 9 has received the final update in only one country, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ have been updated in quite a few markets. The problem exists even on the newer Pie build a couple of countries have received.

Whether the worldwide rollout will fix this remains to be seen, but as it stands, you might want to hold off from updating to Pie if you like taking videos with custom camera settings.

Hi.
No I didn’t found solution.
It’s really disappointing for many users. Can’t believe that samsung taking off great features from their devices.
I’m very disappointed.

One month later, it’s pretty safe to say it was not an accidental omission. Samsung purposely removed features.

Why would any update change years of user habits! For years since my s7, i’ve been double clicking the power button to fast open camera and then start recording video. And i’ve been using that min 3-4 times every day for the past 5 years. And you do an update and you lose that video button and move it to another tab. Now this is NOT an UPDATE!

Not an owner yet, but a potential buyer for S9 or S10 ONLY because of this pro mode video function. Would be very disappointed if not available on Android pie, since not many companies are offering this function but with good picture quality.

I could totally use a pro mode for video recording as the automatic changes of exposure can be a hassle sometimes.

I don’t like this iPhone like camera UI at all. I don’t like it on 8.1 let alone on Pie. Embarrassing that Samsung has ditched its much intuitive and practical camera UI of the past for this one only to please supposed new iPhone switchers

this feature is nice, with the pie update is no longer available .. I think Samsung really has to remember, the front camera produces smooth images without details, Live Focus from rear cameras only works in strong light, in low light never works … we are talking about flagship s9, s9 Plus, so many people are not so happy with the quality Photos

I’ve never used the pro mode for video – not once.

Alson, motion panorama is not available. You can play recorded motion panorama you’ve made in Oreo, but you can’t make one in Pie. This Pie update lacks a lot of features..

Luckily my S9+ still on Oreo with Samsung UX. I tried in my Note9 with One UI beta and it’s horrible. For me Samsung UX is more polished, intuitive, attractive and comfortable than One UI. Only few features of One UI is better than Samsung UX.

Why dont u people post about Animation lag in Pie. For example Choppy Recents animation when using gesture triggered inside an app. What it has been like 4 betas + 2 stable builds and yet samsung cant fix that recents animation. Its horribly Choppy and buggy when triggered inside an app and just fine in the launcher. There is some other Ui lag too still even in CRLO. Please post something to bring this mess to samsung’s attention.

4 betas + 2 stable releases + several years of software development and still the UI lags. Samsung people are used to that so they usually don’t complain about it, and it’s absolutely ridiculous. I hoped this had changed with the new touchwiz but…

Usama 0017
Usama 0017

Actually i bought samsung only because of their Experience Ui which IMO was by far the most superior look wise. It almost never lagged for me. Yes there was some minor animation hiccup but it was very well optimized. Now this One Ui first of all looks inferior and performs extremely bad. The Recent animation in pie is so so annoying its literally a slap on the face of 1000$ Note 9 and 500$ S9 users. Even sub 200$ devices dont have this bad Recent/Task switcher animation.

Yes. They rushed it, and that’s the problem. Pie lags and there’s a lot of missing stuff like:
-you can’t add app pair to home screen
-in alarm there no gradually loud for ringtone
-Pro mode in camera is missing
-In camera you can’t adjust filters liek before (vignette and force)
-Clock is on the left
-Ugly and no comfortable recent apps screen.

and a lot more.

Its beyond belief. This software will power the 1000$ Note 9. If they removed all this functionality then they should have at least increased performance but they have decreased it. A Big slap to all those who invested 1000$ by Samsung. What a shame.

I’m thinking about downgrade to Oreo. What about you ?

Usama 0017
Usama 0017

i have tried every beta build with factory reset and every stable build with factory reset too. I Downgraded everytime after 2-3 days. It has been a day since i flashed this CRLO and also thinking to downgrade again lol.

PookiePrancer

I did. Now I have a permanent “Update Delayed” notification in the status bar, but at least I got my features back.

So Oreo is better ?

It’s funny how the recents animation has always been laggy. They called it One UI but it’s just the touchwiz we’ve known since lollipop (yes I still miss KitKat’s touchwiz). To me ANY even subtle performance drop in the UI (which should be the lightest thing the phone runs) is unforgivable given how big is samsung and how much they charge for their phones

Usama 0017

never had any Recents lag On Oreo. It ran superbly well for my usage.

Also you can create an article about the less functional multiwindow feature. It’s nothing like on the oreo/nougat and it’s like google’s implementation with a lot less functionality + slower to use it: No more “hold recents” to split screen asap, no more corner swipe to pop out, no menu between the split apps to change their position, close one of them, etc. They literally made 3 times worse the multitasking on a phone created for multitasking – absurd. While other things on pie are great, the removed functionality without really careful planning is puzzling. Same with the camera and… Read more »

You’re right!
I would also suggest one more annoying thing.
That would be that you can’t end a phone call from the lock screen.
In oreo you could tap on the phone notification swipe down and press end call .
Now that’s missing!
Also in video resolution settings you have to choose between [email protected] or [email protected],you can’t have them availble like oreo!!!!

Yes. Multitasking is shit in Pie.
