Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge won’t be waterproof but there will be an Active variant
Last year Samsung surprised everyone by revealing during the Galaxy S5 announcement that its new flagship had IP67 certification which allowed the device to be submerged in up to 3.2 feet of water for up to 30 minutes.
Previously Samsung used to make this feature exclusive to the “Active” variants of the flagship for customers who were looking for proper water resistance in a smartphone but it didn’t do that for the Galaxy S5 since it was already capable of that.
If a report out of Korea is to be believed then Samsung might be going back to its old practice. It is claimed that neither the Galaxy S6 nor the Galaxy S6 Edge will be waterproof.
Instead Samsung is going to release a Galaxy S6 Active variant which will exclusively have this ability. It remains to be seen though if this variant is launched alongside the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, or if it’ll make an appearance at some point later this year.

well you guys want metal edged phones your going to have to sacrifice something
Agreed!!! I just don’t understand why Samsung still has to invest so much in new mid-range phones, S-S2-S3 given their specs now and even last year are already considered mid-range and they are good phones, s4 soon by the end of this year will probably be mid-range too.Why does Samsung have to come out with line of A3-A5? A7 is ok because it has a 5.5 inch screen and other more updated specs but that’s all.
This thing with like 50 rumor articles about Galaxy S6 needs to stop. First it will feature Snapdragon 810 then it will not, then it will still be waterproof then it will not, then it will have a removable back and be with a metal design then it will not, then it will have a rounded side then it will have a variant and AAALLL that ends up in the excuse “Samsung is experimenting with several variants”. NO. All those articles are baseless, coming from the mind of the article writer, and they offer nothing to the reader because they… Read more »
That was the most important feature of the Galaxy S5 after the AMOLED display. I see that they are focusing on making the S6 look nicer, but I wish they made a phone that does not require a case to protect its screen, has no bezel, and is waterproof.
s5 active was a better designed phone in my opinion but is redundant since they offer the same waterproof feature.
This is not done!!! I was waiting for the s6 only because of the curved edge(s) and waterproofing!
I wana go in the rain without worrying about damaging my phone as it gets very difficult to handle a phone in the rainy season!!
If samsung makes the s6 edge waterproof, I will buy it without even looking at other specs.
It the meter and the size the s5 way way bigger then the s4 so doing waterproof will make it hard to keep the size down so that will be why they are going with an edge to screen and waterproof
LOL they go back in past, bye bye sammy …
will it be LTE cat 4 ? and no sd card ? no way to remove the battery ?
back in glass ? … OMG who do all this bad idea ?
they will take a door in the face.
yeah….BAD idea if there’s no SD card, no removable battery. Should have plenty of RAM…5GB RAM to make it stand out
Yeah, it seems to be that someone in Samsung’s tech department has been drinking lots of apple juice lately and getting drunk with it. Samsung doesn’t bloody understand that it’s declining sales is not because plastic back or any of it’s other nice features like microSD and removable battery, it’s mainly because it’s stupid obsession in competing with apple in high price tag. Samsung please don’t be so greedy and get your price right and you’ll see how many more phones you’ll sell and consequently how your profits will increase even if the margin of earning for each phone is… Read more »
Wasn’t the waterproofness the selling point of the S5. People can’t see the S6 as a downgrade!
yes a big dowgrade … and : no sd card, no removable battery.
bye bye.
Its a downgrade? I’m sure if you choose to buy another phone it certainly would not have waterproof ability so where exactly are you saying “bye bye” to go?
It may not have removable battery but sd card it wil have I be thinking going by the a7 got it
Definitely a BIG downgrade if there’s no SD card and removable battery
Great decision, waterproof is not needed.
but why not keep it ? that’s so bad … they downgrade.
The S6 is being built from scratch and its alleged that it would be as clean as android on a Nexus phone. This means that all unnecessary features would be removed and Water-proof ability dont sell phones apparently, as other OEMs don’t seem to care about that. I would appreciate the Waterproof ability but even if it is, I wont be going into a pool with a $600-700 smartphone. Hell NO!!
There will be a SD card, I just don’t know about the removable battery…
simply cause S5 waterproof was a failure
I have to disagree on that. If it turns out true, I’d say it’s a terrible decision.
Agreed. And for the other reply, 40 million sold is a failure? The GS5 sold a ton, but 4 million fewer than the S4. And yes a lot of the “tech” people didn’t like it. Samsung did make a bad decision, to keep that design language intact from the S3 to the S4 and then the S5. They were clearly warned by the ever increasing yawns of the tech community that this wouldn’t do. But in the end, the GS5 still outsold any phone in 2014 apart from Apple’s over-rated iPhone 6 line. Rather and join the mob, I’ll leave… Read more »
I have a S5 and I took countless pictures under the water with it, both in the pool and the sea, how is that a failure?
