Samsung has made it clear that smartphones with flexible displays are something the company will be focusing on in the coming months in order to fight back against dwindling profits and revenue margins, and it seems Samsung Display has big plans for flexible displays in the coming year. Lee Chang-hoon, vice president of business strategic team, Samsung Display, has said that Samsung Display will launch a flexible display for smartphones that can be folded in half. “We will secure production capacity of 30,000 to 40,000 [flexible displays each month] by the end of next year.”

At the Samsung Investor Forum 2014 in New York, Chang-hoon boasted that “no company [except Samsung] that has this great production capacity by 2016. We plan to provide consumers with a product that has a flexible display by the end of the year. However, nothing has been decided on the finished product.” With the Galaxy Note Edge getting good reviews in the tech world, it's not surprising that Samsung will be working hard to make flexible displays more mainstream than they are now.

Lee also said that Samsung is planning to lower production costs of AMOLED displays in order to lure more buyers of the technology, something it has found hard to do in the past. “One of the superior things about AMOLED is that [because it has no backlight] it can become cheaper to produce compared to LCD. We are prepared to compete directly with LCD.”
