Samsung Lied about Galaxy Gear Compatibility?

Perhaps “lied” is a strong word, but we were told in no uncertain terms that Samsung’s “Galaxy Gear” smart watch would *only* work with the Galaxy Note 3. At least, until they pushed out compatibility to other higher end Galaxy smartphones.

Contrary to this, however, XDA Developers member ‘clifford’ discovered that he was able to successfully install the Galaxy Gear Manager .apk on his HTC One running omj ROM (on Android 4.1.2) with close-tofull functionality: only SVoice doesn’t seem to work.

“…everything is working fine. I can send a receive calls with no problem. I’m gonna try to install svoice today and see what happens”

XDA user “gidi” suggests that it does not work with a stock HTC One (4.2.2), giving a “validation check failed” error message. What’s going on here? Has Samsung lied to customers about the Galaxy Gear’s compatibility to boost sales of the Note 3? If you have any non-Samsung or older-Samsung devices and a Galaxy Gear, let us know if you can sync them up!

I made it work in a couple of non samsung phones, LG G2 and NExus 4, I got “GEAR SUPERFIXER” from the play store, it guides you and checks for errors and finally lets you pair with the watch, steps were much easier with a Samsung galaxy S4 of my friend because already had required system files, but the app works, dont expect 100% functionality in non samsung phones

I rooted an HTC One as well, and have downloaded and linked up the Gear Manager with my Gear sucessfully. I am running a 4.3 HTC (maximus) ROM and have also tested it on the HTC Google Edition ROM and it works on both. The trick is that you must navigate to the Gear folder in the SD Card folder on your HTC device and install the Samsung Accessory Service once it shows up in the Gear folder (I think it shows up after trying to sync the Gear unsuccessfully). Also install any other gear related app that shows up… Read more »

I just picked up my Samsung Galaxy Gear this morning I own an S3 and a Note 2 but yesterday after trying in vain do download the Gear Manager app from the Samsung Apps Store from my desktop browser there it was in the search but it is only available for download through Kies. When you plug in your device, Kies asks for the Android version, won’t accept 4.3 and if you type 4.1.2 then the gear manager app disappears from the search. I downloaded the apk from xda instead and it installed perfectly on both my devices. It turns… Read more »

We really need Bluetooth 4.0 with LE, otherwise the battery life will not be as long as advertised. Sure it will WORK, you can pair a Polar heart rate strap with a phone and have it work, but the battery life will SUCK, and customers who buy a $300 watch will expect the battery life that is listed, not “it works but goes dead after 5 hours, not 12+”. Obviously, Samsung wanted to push the Note 3, but really, official support has ALWAYS been different from what will work. People put custom Android firmware on their phones, but if there… Read more »

It’s a risk that comes w/ the territory when you try to corner the market too fast. Samsung should/could have hold this over until the year’s end or even early next year. Way too heavy of a SoC used currently and I don’t think that they themselves are very clear on what the Gear should do.

It also works with my S4 on the leaked 4.3 rom. Havent tryed it out on anorther rom but I think on older roms it just doesn’t use bluetooth LE.

The thing is Samsung said it needed the Framework of touchwiz. And now the HTC One can use it.
Wich apperently isn’t running Touchwiz…
