    SGS3 on 3 (UK) network - CM9 fails / locked

    Hi,

Nooby member here and need some serious help or suggestions...

Decided to give rooting / custom ROM a bash. Downloaded the required Odin, CF Root etc. and follwed the instructions to flash CM9.

All went well until once CM9 flashed (apparently successfully) and rebooted. My device just displays the CM9 splash screen, which I left initially for a few (20 or so) minutes, thinking that as the white disk in the middle of the 'Android' on the screen was oscillating / flashing (whatever you decide to call it) that it was performing its stuff. After this I picked my phone up and it was roasting - unsurprisingly! I've retried a couple of times reflashing etc. and going through the CWM recovery which it 'appears' to do, but no difference. My phone still displays the CM9 splash screen. Help please!!

Is my phone bricked or is there something I'm missing / forgetting to try? I believe that as I got my phone through CPW that it's unlocked even though my provider is now with 3.

    * updated - I backed my phone up using Kies prior to the above of course ;o) I also backed things up through Titanium backup

    Cheers.

    A couple of questions:
    1) can you get into recovery by booting the phone with the "Volume Up" + "Home" + "Power" buttons all pressed at once?
    2) did you perform a complete wipe / factory re-set before rebooting?

If the answers are Yes and No, then boot into recovery, perform a full "wipe data / factory reset" by using the volume +/- to move and the power button to select.

    Good luck!

The mistake you appear to have made is flashing firmware to an unlocked phone.
Any phone on the 3 network would be subsidised and the price you pay is to be locked to the network.
Unfortunately the only backup that would have been useful in this case is a nandroid (through CWM)
This would have kept a full copy of your original firmware and apps.

    What I would do?
First thing is can you get into download mode? If so you have a chance.
Download this UK 3 firmware and flash with Odin: [ Login above or register to see download links. ]
This should restore your original firmware, so that you can start again - with an unlock

Just to avoid confusion, it isn't necessary to unlock the phone from the carrier you are on if you want to run CyanogenMod. You should use Chainfire's "CF-Root 6.4" and then you can do a nandriod back-up and flash away (following the instructions!)
