Hello Guys:
I'm from Nicaragua, and I have a New Samsung galaxy mini, with movistar, I'm trying to find a way to update my android version to 2.3, and I really don know where to start, all the info I find is from roms for European phones, I don't know if this will affect my phone, I am going to void my warranty and want to be 100% sure that it will work for my region. what rom should I get? Can I use ICS? please help me.

First of all Download Kies, and try to update with that, it's the official way

I have a similar situation. I have this older Samsung S5570 mini from Singapore (I live in Spain) and I would like, if poss, to update the 2.2 firmware but I haven't a clue what to do. My problem is it's my first ever such machine. Kies won't update, it says device does not support software upgrading by Kies, so I came here. So far I have
rooted the machine and downloaded
Odin Multidownload v.38
Tass vl.0 ops
a compressed file S5570DXB1 which I assume is the 2.3 version for the PDA I have?
I need a dummies' step-by-step guide. I posted a note elsewhere but got rapped because it was the wrong place but I hope someone can help me here.

extract the compressed file.
open your odin, pick 'Tass vl.0 ops' on the OPS label, check 'one package' on the leftmost option, pick the compressed file on One Package label.
turn off your phone, press power+home+volume down button, your phone in 'downloading mode', connect to your PC, Odin will say added and detected, click Start, wait progressbar becomes blue or wait until your phone reboots.
done.
