    [Guide][Root]SGH-I897, I997, I777 Flashing

    DISCLAIMER

Read the entire post before trying anything! You are following this guide at your own risk! If you stray off at any point in time and end up bricking your phone, I'm am not responsible! Roofs flying off the house, cats crapping in your shoes, or your child learning "cripple" as his/her first word aren't my fault either!

    **Notes**
    * Guide is for Windows users. Apologies to our brothers using Linux or Mac, but I'm writing this using the utilities I have at my disposal. If anyone wishes to provide the instructions and files for Linux and Mac users, please do. It would be nice to keep everyone on the same page in their own environment!

    * Captivate Glide i927 / Galaxy S2 Skyrocket i727

    • not included in this guide. I have no access to these devices. If you can confirm methods for these phones, feel free to post instructions

    * Captivate i897

    • WILL NOT return to 2.1/2.2 once loaded with Samsung's 2.3 bootloaders, whereas AT&T's bootloaders are 100% compatible (leak vs official is the difference)

    • will always boot into download mode if soft-bricked
if button combo + USB doesn't work, use a JIG

    * Galaxy Note i717

    • currently every modification done via Odin will increase the Flash counter
    • ClockWorkMod is currently in Beta stages for the Note, but is 100% usable if needed to flash a ROM
    • soft-brick recovery has yet to be tested, be ready to make up a snide excuse for warranty exchange

    Prerequisites

    - Samsung drivers installed (download & install Samsung Kies to get drivers)
    - ODIN3 (v1.7 for Captivate/Infuse, v1.81 for SGS2, v1.85 for Note) downloaded and ready

    - preferred leak or stock rom (read notes at top for i897)
    - JIG or a working USB cable
    - undivided attention on every detail of this post

    Captivate & Infuse Button Config

Galaxy S2 & Galaxy Note Button Config
    - Vole + / - (Up/Down)
    - Home (<3e> & CWM Kernel Select)
    - Power (CWM Select)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    - shut down phone (pulling battery is faster)
    - hold vol dwn & up + pwr
    - release pwr when splash screen pops up

After a few seconds, you should now be in recovery
<2e> recovery is stock for the Captivate i897 2.1
    <3e> recovery is stock for Captivate i897 2.2, Infuse 4G i997, Galaxy S2 i777, Galaxy Note i717

Want CWM recovery instead of 3e recovery?

    3. For root+unlock
Mac & Linux (Depending on how your system is setup, you should be able to just double-click the shell script and have it work... otherwise)
    Open a Terminal window
Navigate to the directory you downloaded the file
Unzip the file if you haven't already
    Go into the directory
    Type: ./root.sh
    Windows
If you don't have the drivers, install Samsung Kies (easiest way)
    Unzip file
Go into directory where the unzipped files are
    Double-click on root.bat
    4. For unlock only
Follow the instructions for root, but use the unlock files instead
To unlock your phone with the provided code, pop in another provider sim card and you'll be prompted on reboot of the phone for the network code.

    Captivate

    - download root file
    working on link
    - rename file to update.zip
    - place file on root of SD (not ext sd; phone won't read it)
    - reboot into recovery
    - choose re-install packages
    - reboot your now rooted phone

    - download CWM recovery file
    working on link
    - rename file to update.zip
    - place file on root of SD (you can rename the other file to anything of your choosing)
    - reboot into recovery
    - choose re-install packages (may have to do this twice)
    - phone should boot into CWM recovery

From here you can install a custom rom, or stick with rooted stock

    Galaxy S2

    - download codeworkx's CWM Kernel
[ Login above or register to see download links. ] <~ link
    - open Odin v1.81
    - open SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar in PDA slot; re-partition must be unchecked
    - boot phone into download mode (instructions further down)
    - confirm USB in inserted into phone & pc
    - confirm Odin reads COM##
    - hit Start

    Galaxy Note

    - download CWM Recovery file [ Login above or register to see download links. ]
    - open ODIN3 1.85
    - boot phone into Download mode
    - open downloaded .tar in PDA slot (never hit re-partition)
    - connect phone
    - hit Start

All thanks goes to braway over at XDA

Once finished, phone will reboot. You can continue from here with flashing a rooted stock rom, or a custom rom

    Download Mode

    Method 1:

    - power down phone
    - insert your JIG; yes, they work on the i997 & i777

    Method 2:

    - shut down phone
    - remove SIM & SD (for safety, i've lost a 32g sdcard flashing my i897 and forgetting the sd was still intact)
    - hold vol + / -
    - insert usb cable (while plugged into pc)
    - hit vol up to enter download mode
    - proceed to flashing via ODIN

    Updating to newest leak

If you aren't using a .PIT file make sure "re-partition" is unchecked!

    - download the newest leak (of course)
    - extract the .tar file into an easy to find location
    - open ODIN as Admin
    - boot phone into dl mode
    - insert usb into phone
    - confirm ODIN says COM##
    - open your .tar file in the PDA tab
    - hit "Start" and let ODIN work its magic

    Once phone boots into recovery

    - select "wipe data/factory reset"
    - select "reboot device" and...

VIOLA! You've officially updated to the newest leak!

    Unbricking your Soft-Bricked Phone

If you've accidentally knocked the USB cable from your phone, knocked out the battery during a flash, etc., then you most likely have the Phone--/!\--PC image

You can fix this using any of these 3 ways:

    Method 1:

    Infuse 4G i997: Confirmed
    GS2 i777: Unconfirmed

    - open ODIN as Admin
    - pull battery
    - remove SIM & SD
    - replace battery
    - insert JIG
    - wait for the digging android to show
    - insert usb cable
    - confirm that ODIN is reading COM##
    - flash leak of your choosing (not custom rom)

    Method 2:

    Infuse 4G i997: Confirmed
    GS2 i777: Unconfirmed

    - pull battery
    - remove SIM & SD
    - replace battery
    - hold vol dwn & up
    - insert usb cable
    - hit vol up to enter download mode
    - flash leak of your choosing (not custom rom)

    Method 3:

    Infuse 4G i997: Confirmed
    GS2 i777: Confirmed

If you can't get your phone into download mode, and you still get the Phone -- /!\ -- PC image

    - pull & replace battery
    - hold vol dwn & up
    - insert usb cable
    - open ODIN as Admin
    - confirm that ODIN is reading COM##
    - flash the last Samsung leak you downloaded
    - confirm that both ODIN and your Infuse are showing the progress bars
    - once your phone reboots into 3e recovery, you've successfully recovered from your accident

Notes are at the beginning of this post so they aren't skipped over. If anyone has any questions or suggestions for this thread, just post it.

Has anyone confirmed this for captivate, just went to gingerbread and need to reroot. does the update.zip work as described to root the now stock gingerbread rom?

    Currently working on updating the download links and instructions. But to provide you with a very, very late response;

    The root described for the captivate are strictly for eclair and froyo as they are on the same bootloaders. Samsung's 2.3 leaks require a different method. BUT, Here are some links you should check out;

Stock ROMs (One Click) - [ Login above or register to see download links. ]

Dunno if these are rooted or completely stock. If rooted, I would stick with the bootloader free one-clicks from now on

Cognition 5 (2.3 stock-esue ROM) - [ Login above or register to see download links. ]

Totally worth trying out DG's Cognition if you plan to stay as stock as possible

I put 2.3.6 on my Infuse (i997) & the dialer freezes after I dial the first number. Is anyone else having this problem?

I never had this issue. Are you trying a leak, or a custom rom?
