Samsung already has the smartwatch market under its belt with four devices launched in less than a year, and is also expected to launch smart glasses in the coming months. Now, According to a source for Engadget, Samsung is working on yet another head-mounted wearable device: a virtual reality (VR) headset. Apparently, a VR headset is currently in development and could be announced later this year. Some developers are reportedly testing the headset already – it is said to be compatible with current flagships like the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5, but will supposedly require next-gen handsets to work once it makes its way to market.

The headset will reportedly be powered by Tizen, and have an OLED display. According to Engadget, Samsung is moving ahead with a VR headset in order to compete with Facebook's Oculus Rift, a VR headset for PC gaming, and Sony's Project Morpheus headset for the PlayStation 4. It seems odd that Samsung would be worried about losing out on the gaming market – the Gear smartwatches haven't exactly set the smartwatch market on fire, so it remains to be seen if the company's VR headset can do anything to kick off the trend of virtual reality in Android gaming, especially if it is compatible only with Samsung's own phones and tablets.
